November 2021

The end of October marks the start of joy filled days.  I hope your High Holidays bring family close, with health and prosperity in abundance!

Veterans' Day

It is a Cherrydale tradition to make cards for veterans. Mrs. Gonzales' husband takes our cards and places them on the dinner trays of veterans in the hospital. We hear that they are received with smiles and thanks.

The Rainbow Fish

Books go in and out of fashion. The children let me know that they did not  know this story of sharing and friendship. We read the book and made our own Rainbow Fish complete with sparkling scales.
The children enjoyed the story. There are sequels if you would like to add to your library.

Directed Drawing

Our reading theme was Shapes all Around. We learned that we can use shapes to draw!
Squares, rectangles, and triangles can make houses and apartment buildings. Rectangles and circles can make a tractor!

Thankful Trees

The PTA had a great activity which we did in school. Everybody had a die. We all rolled at the same tie. Depending on the number you rolled, you got to say on your leaf, what you were thankful for in a particular category. They were :
Person, Place, Thing, Food, and Free Choice.
I wrote their choices, then they colored and added water color. Our leaves were added to the big tree in the hall outside the office.

We made our own Thankful Tree posters. These went home in backpacks on Tuesday. This was a challenging activity. After we read the book, The Secret of Saying Thanks, we each shared an idea that we could be thankful for. One of our students mentioned being thankful for people who died. We searched for a word that would fit on our leaf and decided 'ancestors' would honor those who have gone before us. The children did their best to copy words from the board. I was very proud of their perseverance!

Sorting and Classifying

Sorting and classifying is a natural activity for children. It is also the very foundation of math and science. We took some of our morning activities and worked in groups. We examined the items and then talked about the different ways we could sort and group the items. There were some really excellent math discussions!

Turkey Time!

The children had fun making 2 turkey crafts. The first, we made after watching a Mystery Science lesson about turkeys and other animals with display plummage. We learned that the male birds have all the colors while the females are more plain so they can be safe while on the nest. Our first craft used tissue paper and glue  to create our Tom turkey's colorful plummage. Popsicle sticks helped us tap the tissue in the glue without getting our fingers too sticky to touch the tissue paper again.

I couldn't let the holiday go by without a handprint turkey. We squeezed it in today! Time would not allow pictures of everyone due to the shortened day.

That's all for now.
I hope you all are enjoying togetherness and joy with family.
Here comes December!

Kindly
Ms Rae
